Particle entrainment and rotating convection in Enceladus’ ocean

چکیده

Abstract Observations from Cassini have identified nanometer-sized silica grains in Saturn’s E-ring although their origin is unclear. Tidal deformation within Enceladus’ silicate core has been predicted to generate hot hydrothermal fluids that rise the core-ocean boundary and traverse subsurface ocean. This raises possibility particles observed by could produced alteration ejected via south polar plumes. Here, we use an analytical model quantify potential for particle entrainment We scaling relations characterize ocean convection define a parameter space enables entrainment. find both heat fluxes transport timescale necessary drive oceanic entrain of sizes are consistent with observations predictions existing thermal models. conclude at seafloor indeed be source E-ring.

Studies in Rotating Convection

This thesis presents an exploration and analysis of novel phenomena in RayleighBénard convection in a rotating cylinder using direct numerical simulation and equivariant bifurcation analysis. The numerical method used is a second order predictorcorrector method using Chebyshev collocation in the radial and axial directions and a Fourier-Galerkin discretization in the azimuthal direction. This n...

Thermal convection in ice-I shells of Titan and Enceladus

Cassini–Huygens observations have shown that Titan and Enceladus are geologically active icy satellites. Mitri and Showman [Mitri, G., Showman, A.P., 2005. Icarus 177, 447–460] and McKinnon [McKinnon, W.B., 2006. Icarus 183, 435–450] investigated the dynamics of an ice shell overlying a pure liquid-water ocean and showed that transitions from a conductive state to a convective state have major ...

Heat Transport in Rotating Convection

We derive upper bounds for the Nusselt number in innnite Prandtl-number rotating convection. The bounds decay algebraically with Taylor number to the conductive heat transport value; the decay rate depends on boundary conditions. We show moreover that when the rotation is fast enough the purely conductive solution is the globally and nonlinearly attractive xed point; the critical rotation rate ...

Convection in Enceladus’ ice shell: Conditions for initiation

[1] Observations of Enceladus by the Cassini spacecraft indicate that this tiny Saturnian moon is geologically active, with plumes of water vapor and ice particles erupting from its southern polar region. This activity suggests that tidal dissipation has become spatially localized, perhaps due to a compositional, rheological, and/or thermal anomaly in its ice shell. Here we examine the role tha...

Deep Convection in the Ocean

SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES Issues specific to oceanic deep convection are the relatively strong role of rotation, such that convective Rossby numbers appropriate to the vertical motions may fall below unity; the highly intermittent nature of the forcing, with the strong impulses coming during the passage of atmospheric weather systems; the possible highly localized occurrence of deep convection; and...
